What is the 15-foot fire hydrant parking rule in NYC and how do I avoid the $115 ticket?

Under NYC Traffic Rules it is illegal to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. The fine is $115 citywide (NYC Department of Finance violation code 40). Spotto shows a 15-foot proximity warning around mapped hydrant locations to help you keep clear — always confirm with posted signs and use your own judgment.

Can I park after the street sweeper passes in NYC during Alternate Side Parking (ASP)?

Parking regulations stay in effect for the entire posted window — even after a street sweeper has passed (per NYC 311). Spotto shows posted Alternate Side schedules and suspension dates so you can plan your moves; always follow the posted sign.

What times are NYC parking meters free across each borough?

All NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) parking meters are 100% free on Sundays throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. On Monday through Saturday, metered payment hours generally end at 7:00 PM on standard avenues or 10:00 PM in dense entertainment zones (such as Midtown, SoHo, and Downtown Brooklyn). In addition, meters are suspended on major legal holidays including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Spotto NYC tracks meter schedules and alerts you when your current zone enters its free parking window.

How does a Spotto parking spot hold and handoff work in NYC?

A Spotto spot hold is an active curb handoff between a departing driver and an arriving driver. When a driver is preparing to leave a curb space, they tap 'Leaving Spot' in the Spotto app and set a hold duration (up to 15 minutes free, up to 30 minutes with Driver Pro). An arriving driver claims the hold, and the app shares arrival ETA updates and vehicle color/model with the holding driver. The holder earns +100 Spotto Points when the handoff completes.

Can private passenger cars park in NYC commercial loading zones?

During posted commercial loading hours (typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM), passenger vehicles with passenger registration plates are prohibited from parking or standing in commercial loading zones. Violations carry a $95 to $115 ticket. However, passenger vehicles are permitted to make an expeditious passenger drop-off or pickup (under 2 minutes) provided the driver remains with the vehicle. Outside of posted commercial hours (e.g., after 6:00 PM / 7:00 PM on weekdays and all day on Sundays), these zones revert to free public street parking unless otherwise posted. Spotto automatically decodes commercial loading zone sign hours for your exact curb location.

Where can I find free street parking in Upper West Side, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Astoria?

Free street parking in NYC is mostly about timing and posted rules, not secret blocks. Outside Alternate Side Parking windows and meter hours, residential side streets across neighborhoods like the Upper West Side, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Astoria open up — always follow the posted sign on the exact block you park on. Spotto shows posted ASP schedules, suspension dates, and meter hours for the block you are on, plus peer spot holds shared by departing drivers.

What is the best app to avoid the $115 NYC hydrant ticket?

Spotto warns you when you park within 15 feet of a mapped hydrant location (NYC Open Data) — a $115 ticket risk. Always confirm with posted signs.

How does Spotto verify commercial garages and valet parking lots?

Commercial garage operators claim their facility, execute the Spotto Partner Agreement, and publish their rates and hours directly to NYC drivers. Every listing is reviewed by our team before going live.

Peer Spot Holds: Coordinate handoffs with departing drivers with live ETA telemetry and in-app chat.
15ft Fire Hydrant Radar: GPS-based proximity warnings around mapped hydrant locations to help you avoid $115 tickets.
Ticket Shield Move Warnings: Two warnings — 30 and 15 minutes before your meter expires or the sweeper starts on your block — then the shield ends quietly.
